- David works to deepen understandings of the dynamic changes we enact on environments around the world. I specialize in studies of the political economy of environmental change, and the anthropology of social movements and Indonesia. A .pdf of my full C.V. is available here. In 2017-8 I will be a Geballe Dissertation Fellow at Stanford’s Humanities Center. I have authored peer-reviewed research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Agrarian Change, Human Ecology, and Journal of Peasant Studies. My work is grounded in more than three years of fieldwork in the Bukit Barisan mountains of Sumatra, Indonesia and the Yasuni Rainforest of the Ecuadorian Amazon. I am the recipient of more than fifteen grants. Major support includes: Wenner-Gren Foundation, National Science Foundation, National Geographic, Henry Luce Foundation, and Fulbright Foundation. My work for non-profits includes: United Nations Development Program, Food and Agriculture Organization, Amazon Watch, Rainforest Action Network, World Resources Institute, Word Wildlife Fund, Friends of the Earth International, World Rainforest Movement, CIFOR, Rainforest Trust, Conservation International and 350.org. Among many others, my photography has been published by: The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Times of London, Guardian UK, US Today, Globe and Mail, Smithsonian, Human Rights Watch, Earth Island Journal, Mother Jones, Outside, Ecologist, The Lancet, BioTropica, Mongabay, Grist, BBC’s Panorama, Vice, ABC, NBC, MTV, BET and the Oscar nominated feature documentary Crude. I have produced reportage for: Discovery Channel, HBO, Nation, Reuters, and Kyoto News Agency. I have experience working in: Kirinci National Park, West Sumatra; Bukit Tigapuluh National Park, Jambi; The Kampar Peninsula, Riau; The Kerumutan Ecosystem, Riau; The Ulu Masen Ecosystem, Aceh Leuser Ecosystem, Aceh; The Borneo Borderlands, West Kalimantan, Bali, Lombok, the Mentawai Islands, Yasuni National Park, Ecuador; and the Huaorani Territories, Lago Agrio and the Cofan Territories in the Ecuadorian Amazon, the Cordillera Blanca, Peru, Baja Sur, Mexico, the Pacific Coast, California and the Cascades, in the Pacific Northwest.
